Porcupine Wood Products Ltd. based in Salmo, BC is looking suitable applicants for the position of Saw Filer who are self-motivated and have good interpersonal skills. Porcupine Wood Products are truly outstanding in terms of grain quality and knot structure. Our sawmill converts Western Red Cedar logs into high-quality decking, fencing, siding, and trim board products. Porcupine cuts slow-growing second-growth logs with a butt diameter of less than 20 inches. These logs yield lumber with tight grain and few knots.

This fibre is excellent for decking, dimensioning, fencing, and sidings. We manufacture cedar products that are among the best, if not the best, on the market. We are a forest company that is fully integrated. Our business model is to extract value from the logs we process, from the harvesting of cedar logs to the finished product. We can do more with the sustainable wood basket we have to work with if we use this model. The candidate who got selected will be required to start work as soon as possible. Job Description

  • The candidate will be expected to set and sharpen a variety of saws.
  • The candidate will be expected to effectively prepare round saws, band saws, and knives for use in a sawmill environment while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • The candidate will be expected to perform routine repairs and preventative maintenance on the filing room grinding equipment.
  • The candidate will be expected to communicate and collaborate with maintenance, production, and management personnel to achieve the department and facility’s goals.
  • The candidate must attend safety meetings and activities as determined by team and mill norms and standards.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting and safely carrying out saw filing activities.
  • The candidate will be required to troubleshoot knife, circle saws, band saws, and guide problems.
  • The candidate must be able to follow all safety and environmental policies, procedures, and recommendations.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing saw teeth and replacing broken and missing teeth.
  • The candidate will be in charge of keeping the general area clean and free of debris and spills.
  • The candidate will be in charge of keeping filing room equipment such as grinders, tippers, and levellers in good working order.
  • The candidate will be in charge of scheduling knife replacements and ensuring proper clearances are maintained in machine centres throughout the facility, including Sawline, Edger, and Planers.
  • The candidate will be in charge of maximizing equipment uptime and quality while adhering to the strictest safety standards.
  • The candidate will be in charge of measuring product sizes to ensure accuracy, monitoring the cut, and making necessary adjustments.
  • The candidate will be responsible for communicating with the supervisor about any mechanical or electrical issues.

  • The candidate should have minimum qualification of Other trades certificate or diploma
    or equivalent experience.
  • The ideal candidate should have a minimum 3 to  5 years of working experience in similar industry.

  • The candidate will be required to work in dusty, wet, hot and cold weather conditions.
