Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining transmission and distribution lines on poles, towers, and structures. The candidate will patrol circuits, perform assigned inspections, complete emergency repairs, repair street lights, make distribution transformer connections, investigate customer complaints and service interruptions, install and remove meters notwithstanding the duties assigned to a Meter Technician, remain familiar with lines and the distribution portion of substations, refuse transformers and disconnects, make collections, connect and disconnect services, and operate or switch on lines.
- The candidate must not operate any station apparatus equipped with supervisory control, including when serving as a Power Line Technician designated as the Person In Charge (P.I.C.).
- The candidate will be responsible for framing, erecting, stringing, and terminating all wire buses and overhead lines supported by strain type insulators in outdoor substations.
- The candidate may perform work on plastic insulated cables and accessories up to and including 20/35 kV, notwithstanding the duties assigned to a Power Cable Technician.
- The candidate must operate hole digging attachments, pole setting equipment, and related equipment on line trucks.
- The candidate may serve as the Person In Charge (P.I.C.) for the operation of distribution lines or circuits operating at 35 kV and below, as designated by BC Hydro through local operating orders, where the lines are not under the direct control of an Area Control Station or a generating station, and the designation will be identified and recorded.
- The candidate will be responsible for carrying out the Person In Charge (P.I.C.) duties, including issuing instructions for safety assurances on distribution lines and circuits for employees working in proximity.
- The candidate must respond to area electrical disturbances, maintain logs and other records, and ensure the system mimic display board remains up to date.
- The candidate may operate and switch distribution equipment on systems rated at 35 kV and below, up to but not including the feeder bus in distribution supply stations, notwithstanding the duties assigned to an Electrician.
- The candidate will occasionally switch equipment or replace fuses in distribution supply stations rated at 35 kV and above when fault conditions exist and an Electrician is not readily available.
- The candidate may perform the installation and maintenance of Distribution automation equipment, including battery replacement, modem replacement, and power resets, notwithstanding the duties normally assigned to a Communication, Protection and Control Technologist. Communication Protection and Control Technologists retain jurisdiction for this work.
- The candidate will be responsible for supervising the work of individuals under their charge to ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
- The candidate will be responsible for instructing and directing workers to ensure they understand and properly perform their assigned duties.
- The candidate will be responsible for planning and coordinating work activities for employees and contractors to ensure efficient project execution.
- The candidate will be responsible for supervising employees and assigning work to ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- The candidate will be responsible for preparing and maintaining quality control of all work completed under their supervision.
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring all work-related documentation, information, and records remain accurate and up to date.
- The candidate will be responsible for communicating and coordinating with appropriate internal and external parties as required.
- The candidate will be responsible for providing performance feedback to crew members to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must hold a trade qualification as a Journeyperson Power Line Technician with an Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate or be eligible to obtain one.
- The candidate must possess a valid Class 3 driver’s license with an air brake endorsement.
- The candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills.
- The candidate will be required to demonstrate a strong commitment to safety leadership and will not be considered if they have had a reckless or repeated at-risk Life Saving Rule violation under Just Culture in the previous 24 months.
- The candidate must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a Journeyperson Power Line Technician (PLT).
- The candidate must have crew leadership experience either as a Relief Subforeperson or in a current Subforeperson role.
- The candidate with current helicopter certification will be considered an asset.
- The candidate with current safe boating certification will be considered an asset.

- The candidate will be required to travel away from headquarters as needed.
- The candidate will be required to participate in a standby rotation as part of the position requirements.
- The candidate will be required to live within 30 km or a 30-minute travel time from the Prince Rupert headquarters.
- The candidate will be required to work in, around, and underneath helicopters as part of the job duties.
- The candidate will be required to travel by small boats to isolated locations while working in all weather conditions.
