Job Description
- The candidate will lead the design of telecom networks and circuits to ensure reliability, performance, and security for real-time grid operations and future utility technologies.
- The candidate will act as the Professional of Record (PoR) for internal designs and serve as Owner’s Engineer for external engineering service provider submissions, ensuring compliance with safety, technical, and regulatory requirements.
- The candidate will provide design calculations, drawings, and installation documentation for telecom infrastructure, including microwave radio links, fiber optic networks, WiMAX, satellite communications, power line carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, IP/MPLS networks, digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexers, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, and -48 VDC power systems.
- The candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing IP/MPLS network architectures for utility telecommunications systems, covering network planning, configuration, lab validation, interoperability testing, and migration execution, while also developing QoS and traffic engineering solutions to support SCADA and protection system performance with full engineering documentation and field support during cutovers.
- The candidate will work closely with Project Managers and construction teams to achieve safety, cost, and schedule goals, resolve complex field issues, and provide technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- The candidate will conduct specialized engineering studies and technical investigations to solve complex problems in transport networks, SCADA communications, protection circuits, and cybersecurity-related telecom infrastructure.
- The candidate will ensure all engineering work complies with EGBC requirements, BC Hydro standards, and industry best practices while reinforcing technical integrity and professional accountability.
- The candidate will participate in site visits and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to confirm design intent, support field implementation, and assist with maintenance and emergency restoration activities when critical telecom systems are impacted.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- The candidate must be registered as a P.Eng. or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or hold equivalent registration in another Canadian province or internationally, or demonstrate active pursuit of registration with EGBC.
- The candidate should have design experience with at least one of the following telecom technologies: microwave radio links, fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN), WiMAX radio networks, satellite communications, power line carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexers, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, -48V DC power systems and grounding, and TDM (SONET/PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits including circuits carrying teleprotection and RAS.
- The candidate should have experience in IP/MPLS architecture and design covering IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, EVPN, Segment Routing, QoS, traffic engineering, and security in large-scale LAN/WAN environments.
- The candidate should have experience configuring and deploying Nokia IP/MPLS platforms, including L2/L3VPN and QoS technologies.
- The candidate should have Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE) certification, which will be considered an asset.
- The candidate will be considered an asset if they hold Nokia NRS II (Network Routing Specialist) or Nokia Certified Service Routing Architect (SRA) certification.
- The candidate must have a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience for the Senior Engineer level.
- The candidate must have at least four (4) years of applicable professional experience for Engineer 2.
- Candidates with less experience may be considered for an Engineer 1 position and must be or be eligible to be registered as an EIT with EGBC.
- The candidate should demonstrate excellence in technical writing and verbal communication.
- The candidate should have the ability to work independently, take initiative on complex problems, and seek guidance when necessary.
- The candidate should have a solid understanding of project management processes, contract management, and construction oversight.
- The candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing for site visits and field support.
- Candidates who are internationally trained or require an LMIA may be considered, as long as they can show they are actively working toward EGBC registration (P.Eng. or EIT).
