Job Description
- The candidate will be required to lead or review the effectiveness and implementation of mitigation measures required by natural resource sector authorizations and regulations.
- The candidate will be required to develop and implement laboratory and field studies to answer questions about aquatic and terrestrial species, habitats, and/or ecosystem management or to test new theories or approaches.
- The candidate will be required to lead, develop, and/or contribute to programs, projects, and initiatives for the management, protection, and/or recovery of species, habitats, and/or ecosystems.
- The candidate will be required to develop and/or draft science-based reports and standards and provide recommendations for management actions.
- The candidate will be required to provide science-based information and advice as a client service professional to Senior Biologists, section heads, ministry clients, First Nations and other stakeholders, as well as management and other decision makers and practitioners.
- The candidate must document methodology, information sources, and content in accordance with applicable scientific standards for species, habitats, and/or ecosystems assessments.
- The candidate must develop methodologies and plans and carry out inventories or other collection of biological samples or specimens.
- The candidate will be required to lead the development, preparation, and delivery of extension notes and other communication materials under the direction of the supervisor.
- The candidate will be required to contribute to projects addressing large-scale resource management issues or initiatives and lead project planning sessions to determine project scope, define project deliverables, and pursue funding.
- The candidate will be required to review published and unpublished research data and use statistical techniques to analyse, quantify, and synthesize data.
- The candidate will be required to develop and promote working relationships and support negotiation of agreements with internal and external partners, stakeholders, First Nations, and government agencies to achieve program or project objectives.
- The candidate will be required to conduct environmental and biological assessments to determine whether legal objectives or regulatory requirements have been met, gather evidence, document findings, and provide assistance to compliance authorities.
- The candidate will be required to develop science-based input on mitigation strategies for major and/or high-risk project developments under the direction of the supervisor.
- The candidate will be required to develop and administer contracts and assess and monitor performance.
- The candidate will be required to manage project budgets and expenditures.
- The candidate will be required to act as a delegated decision-maker in accordance with policy and legislation.
- The candidate will be required to act as a witness for cases that appear in court and administrative proceedings.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Biological Sciences or a related field and two (2) years of related experience.
- The candidate must have experience in designing, developing, and delivering fish species and habitat management strategies.
- The candidate must have experience in methodologies used to assess fish population and habitat parameters and collecting, analyzing, and reporting biological data.
- The candidate must have experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
- The candidate must have experience delivering both written and oral communications.
- The candidate must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB).
- The candidate must meet all requirements for full professional registration and complete the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment if claiming immediate eligibility for registration.
- The candidate will be required to hold a valid BC driver’s licence.
- The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.

Work conditions
- The candidate must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
- The candidate must be able to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments, including travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, overnight or extended stays in camp conditions, and operation of a variety of equipment.
- The candidate must meet the safety standards of WorkSafeBC.
