Student Biological field assistant 

Parks Canada has released a notice of hiring eligible candidates for the post of Student biological field assistant. Candidates who are eligible and willing to join this post can apply for this post. They’re appointed to this post to assist the Resource Conservation team in monitoring the health of the park ecosystem, assessing the status of species at risk, and completing restoration programs. Job Description 

  • Candidates working in this post are appointed to be involved in visiting less-travelled areas of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. 
  • They’re also appointed to work in forest, aquatic and vegetation surveys in remote sites. 
  • Candidates are also appointed for measuring and recording biological data, including handling live specimens. 
  • They’re also appointed for entering data into computer databases. 
  • Candidates working at this post are also appointed for maintaining, cleaning and repairing field equipment. 
  • Candidates are appointed to take control of invasive species working at this post. 

Job requirement 

  • Candidates working in this post must attain a minimum of 1 year of post-secondary studies in a natural science or natural resource management program. 
  • They must attain basic knowledge of flora and fauna specific to Cape Breton Highlands National Park to be eligible for this post. 
  • Candidates must attain basic knowledge of computers and data management.
  • They must attain the ability to measure and record biological data.
  • Candidates must attain dedicated experience with large mammals, such as bears, coyotes, moose, and similar wildlife, or with human-wildlife coexistence activities.
  • Candidates must have Knowledge of wilderness and remote travel to be eligible for this post. 
  • Candidates must have a valid class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s License, or other provincial equivalency.
  • They must attain the willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.

Work setting 

  • Candidates must have the willingness to work and travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
