Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for serving as a professional member of the Indigenous Relations Team by providing specialized expertise in building and maintaining ongoing relationships with First Nations, advancing reconciliation, facilitating conflict resolution, and ensuring duty to consult obligations and related regulatory processes are carried out effectively.
- The candidate will be responsible for leading relationships with First Nations throughout Southwest BC to foster collaboration and advance reconciliation.
- The candidate will be responsible for leading BC Hydro’s consultation with First Nations for capital projects requiring regulatory and provincial authorizations and ensuring consultation requirements are adequately fulfilled.
- The candidate will be responsible for supporting compliance by ensuring First Nation conditions and commitments under provincial and federal authorizations are met.
- The candidate will be responsible for leading the First Nations component of capital projects involving moderate to high relationship, legal, environmental, reputational, and other key risks.
- The candidate will be responsible for developing consultation plans during project scoping by identifying consultation requirements and working with Project Managers to deliver the First Nations component of projects.
- The candidate will be responsible for applying advanced relationship management, negotiation, and persuasive communication skills to build and maintain trust with diverse First Nations communities across the province.
- The candidate will be responsible for participating in the research, assessment, and development of business strategies related to Indigenous Relations, identifying and analyzing issues, developing options for consideration, and leading key Indigenous Relations issues and initiatives when required.
- The candidate will be responsible for evaluating complex situations that arise during consultation, assessing their scope and impact, and identifying practical options that balance cultural, territorial, and other important considerations.
- The candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership to Project Coordinators and other junior team members in project planning, execution, documentation, records management, and First Nations relationship management.
- The candidate will be responsible for serving as a technical specialist in First Nations engagement by supporting operational teams, intervening in, and resolving actual or potential conflicts between BC Hydro and First Nations communities.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must hold a university undergraduate degree in First Nations Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, Land and Resource Management, Law, Anthropology, or a related discipline, or possess an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- The candidate must have a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in a business environment within the public or private sector, preferably in a resource-based organization.
- The candidate must demonstrate subject matter expertise in First Nation relationship-building, consultation, and engagement, including proven experience working with Indigenous Peoples to advance projects and initiatives.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the clean energy sector.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental assessment, preparing provincial and federal regulatory applications, and managing First Nation consultation requirements for capital projects.
- The candidate must maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing as a condition of employment.
