Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for supervising adults under probation, conditional sentence, temporary absence, bail, recognizances/peace bond orders, and alternative measures agreements as directed by judicial or quasi-judicial orders.
  • The candidate will be responsible for explaining the conditions of judicial and quasi-judicial orders to clients, reporting violations to the Court, Crown Counsel, adult custody centre, or other appropriate agency as required by Branch policy, monitoring client behaviour and progress, and documenting information in client records.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting clients on bail by assessing their needs, preparing case plans in accordance with court orders, providing information about community resources, and making referrals to community agencies and programs, including drug and alcohol counselling and treatment, forensics, mental health, and Aboriginal justice contractors.
  • The candidate will be responsible for evaluating sentenced client risks and needs through the use of appropriate Risk/Needs Assessment tools.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing and applying individual case management plans for sentenced clients in compliance with policy and the risk needs responsivity principle to support the reduction of criminal behavior.
  • The candidate will be responsible for communicating with collaterals and gathering information to support the development and implementation of case management plans.
  • The candidate will assist clients in meeting and complying with the legal obligations of their community supervision orders.
  • The candidate will be responsible for applying, teaching, and demonstrating a range of interventions, including strategic supervision, enforcement, program delivery, structured and focused interviewing, positive rapport building, rewarding pro-social behaviours, cognitive behavioural interventions, trauma-informed practice, the use of Core Concepts, the use of Essential Skills to Success, and collaboration with and referrals to other agencies that address identified criminogenic needs.
  • The candidate will provide specialized supervision and case management to specific client groups, including sex offenders, intimate partner violence offenders, and clients with mental health needs, in accordance with Branch policy.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assigning work to and supervising secondary case managers and Aboriginal Justice Workers.
  • The candidate will be responsible for delivering secondary case management services for other jurisdictions while monitoring and reporting client behaviour and status.
  • The candidate must maintain awareness of local Indigenous Nations and community resources to respond appropriately to the cultural needs of clients.
  • The candidate must maintain awareness of appropriate community resources to respond to clients in crisis situations and address case management needs, including counselling and mental health support.
  • The candidate will be responsible for collaborating with community agencies and justice agencies in the management of clients under supervision while obtaining case consultation when needed.
  • The candidate will use technology in case management, including E-reporting whenever possible and electronic supervision as required.
  • The candidate will conduct in-person interviews, home visits, and telephone interviews to develop case management plans and provide specific modes of supervision.
  • The candidate will conduct in-person, structured, and focused interviews to support client compliance with supervision conditions and address criminogenic needs.
  • The candidate will be responsible for interviewing clients, victims, and collateral contacts in offices, institutions, facilities, homes, and community settings to collect social, personal, health, court, and correctional history information required for risk/needs assessments, Pre-Sentence Reports, and case management activities.
  • The candidate will conduct breach investigations and submit reports of violations to the appropriate authorities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing Pre-Sentence and other Court-requested reports through a comprehensive review of client records and investigative interviews with clients, victims, and collateral contacts.
  • The candidate will assist the Court in determining sentencing options by recommending interventions available in community and custody settings, with particular attention to the circumstances of Indigenous offenders, and present investigation findings to the Court in a clear, concise, and professional written or verbal manner.
  • The candidate will maintain and apply accurate knowledge of legislation, programs, policies, services, and community resources.
  • The candidate will prepare reports requested by Crown Counsel or adult custody centres regarding client progress, risk and needs, and conditional release.
  • The candidate will coordinate and facilitate CORE programs for groups of clients, monitor client progress, and ensure accurate data entry of CORE Program participation and outcomes.
  • The candidate will monitor and update conditional sentence orders as required while ensuring their accurate calculation.
  • The candidate will process alternative measures referrals for alleged sexual and intimate partner violence offences by completing risk assessments and developing alternative measures plans.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coordinating with justice partners and community agencies to support plan compliance and completion.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in integrated case conference meetings.
  • The candidate will be responsible for communicating appropriate information to victims, the public, and other agencies while complying with legislation and Branch policy.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coordinating with the local manager, senior probation officer, and local RCMP/police detachment on residence approvals, curfew checks, notifications, and other related activities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for fulfilling the role of an “officer of the court,” including laying and/or swearing information, making 810.1/810.2 Recognizance applications, providing verbal reports or updates to the court, and testifying in court proceedings.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing information to criminal justice partners regarding enforcement, sentencing options, community resources, and/or client status.
  • The candidate will be responsible for responding to public inquiries and handling routine requests for information and assistance.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in internal and external justice or social services committees or meetings and attending related meetings and/or training as required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for promoting and developing community resources that fall within the mandate of the Corrections Branch and speaking with community members about the role of the Corrections Branch and Community Corrections to further public education and promote diversity in recruitment.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing input into Branch policies, programs, and procedures.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing or assisting in the creation of critical incident reports or file summaries at the request of the Local Manager/Senior Probation Officer.
  • The candidate will be responsible for taking on specific office roles such as vehicle fleet manager, equipment management, first aid duties, and occupational health representative.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting the Local Manager and/or Senior Probation Officer in mentoring, orienting, and tutoring new employees, practicum students, and/or volunteers.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in clinical support meetings and professional development activities, including research projects.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from a Canadian designated educational institution.
  • The candidate must have completed a two-year diploma and possess 3 years of full-time related experience (or equivalent) working with people with complex social, health, or legal needs.
  • The candidate must have completed sixty (60) credits of post-secondary education towards a diploma and possess 3 years of full-time related experience (or equivalent) working with people with complex social, health, or legal needs.
  • The candidate must ensure that any post-secondary education obtained outside of Canada has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services and submit a Comprehensive Report by the closing date of this posting to be considered. The candidate must also provide proof of English language proficiency if the post-secondary education was instructed in a language other than English.
  • The candidate must have successfully completed the Adult Probation Officer pre-requisite course (CORR1000). Exemptions are outlined in the Job Profile.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license without restrictions or an equivalent Canadian driver’s license. A valid BC Class 7 may also be considered.

Work conditions and physical capabilities

  • Part-time candidates must be willing to adjust their work hours while completing basic training.
  • The candidate must be willing to travel overnight to remote locations and work outside regular business hours when required.
