Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for proactively inspecting workplaces to ensure a safe work environment is maintained and for communicating potential hazards, risks, and controls.
  • The candidate will be responsible for mitigating potential health and safety hazards, ensuring workers and employers are informed of their responsibilities, and verifying that first aid services and equipment meet current requirements.
  • The candidate will be responsible for writing orders to ensure compliance with the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation.
  • The candidate will be responsible for consulting with and educating employers, workers, and others on occupational health and safety matters.
  • The candidate must collaborate with industry stakeholders to support successful safety initiatives.
  • The candidate will be responsible for consistently modeling organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees, including being responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate will be required to use knowledge of workplace operations, equipment, and technology to enhance safety conditions.
  • The candidate must use strong communication skills to explain hazards, risks, and controls and ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • The candidate will be responsible for using critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate workplace health and safety hazards and identify effective mitigations and controls.
  • The candidate will be responsible for making and enforcing timely decisions independently and objectively, using sound judgment and technical knowledge.
  • The candidate will be responsible for handling high-pressure, tense situations and emergencies with a high level of professionalism.
  • The candidate will be responsible for working variable hours, being available for emergency call-outs after hours or on weekends, and traveling throughout the province.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years of relevant and progressive experience in one or two of the listed industries, with broad knowledge of industry processes, equipment, terminology, risks, and hazards.
  • Experience may include roles such as superintendent, health and safety representative, owner, foreman, tradesperson, equipment operator, health and safety coordinator, health and safety manager, or health and safety consultant.
  • The candidate must have general knowledge of occupational health and safety, as demonstrated through education such as an OHS diploma, certification such as CRSP or CSP, and/or relevant OH&S experience including formal roles or active Joint Health Committee participation.
  • The candidate will be required to confirm legal eligibility to work in Canada.
