Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for performing manual maintenance and repair work on the City’s water system, including sanitary and storm sewer systems when required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for operating, maintaining, cleaning, testing, repairing, and adjusting fire hydrants, pumps, and related utility equipment.
  • The candidate will be responsible for repairing or replacing water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer services as required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for responding to service calls related to utility services and connections.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supervising staff assigned to complete less complex utility maintenance activities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supervising staff who operate vacuum trucks and perform skilled pipelaying and pipefitting tasks.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have completed Grade 12 along with relevant experience, or possess an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • The candidate must have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in water and sewer system maintenance, pipelaying, and pipefitting work, along with applicable safety standards and requirements.
  • The candidate must have considerable knowledge of water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems, including the functions of the Underground Operations Branch related to the assigned work.
  • The candidate must have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and safety procedures required for the safe and efficient operation of medium-sized equipment.
  • The candidate must be able to operate, perform routine servicing, and complete minor repairs on related equipment.
  • The candidate must be able to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision and interpret plans, charts, diagrams, and layouts.
  • The candidate must be able to organize, assist with, and supervise manual maintenance tasks performed by subordinates while directing equipment operators and truck drivers to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • The candidate must be able to maintain accurate and simple records related to completed work activities.
  • The candidate must have skill in using a variety of power and hand tools and equipment commonly used in maintenance operations.
  • The candidate must possess a valid EOCP Water Distribution System Operator – Level 1 certification in good standing.
  • The candidate must hold a valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with an Air Brake Endorsement issued in the Province of British Columbia.

Work conditions and physical capabilities

  • The candidate must possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, and coordination to perform heavy manual work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • The candidate will be required to participate in emergency response activities, including watermain break repairs and snow-clearing operations during regular and after-hours shifts as weather conditions require.
