Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for operating a rubber-tired hydraulic backhoe to perform civic construction work, including excavating, loading, unloading, grading, shouldering, backfilling, and pipelaying operations.
  • The candidate will be responsible for operating a rubber tired industrial or farm-type tractor equipped with a flail mower attached to an extended hydraulic boom and other equipment of similar complexity.
  • The candidate will be responsible for responding to emergency situations, including flooding, drain blockages, water main or service breaks, and fallen trees impacting roads and utilities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for performing routine servicing, minor repairs, and maintenance on operated equipment.
  • The candidate will be responsible for completing and maintaining records related to the work and equipment as required.
  • The candidate may be required to perform minor supervisory duties and assist one or more subordinates with duties related to the operation of equipment.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have thorough knowledge of the methods and practices employed in the operation of construction equipment.
  • The candidate must have thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the safe operation of equipment and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents.
  • The candidate must have sound knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and supplies used in the provision of underground and other municipal services.
  • The candidate must have sound knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools used in the servicing and maintenance of the equipment operated.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of the operation of diesel and gasoline motors, where operated.
  • The candidate must be able to operate equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • The candidate must be able to plan work to operate equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • The candidate must be able to understand oral and written instructions and work from drawings, plans, worksheets, and cutsheets.
  • The candidate must be able to prepare and maintain records and reports related to the work.
  • The candidate must be able to perform manual work requiring considerable physical endurance.
  • The candidate must be able to supervise one or more subordinates performing unskilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • The candidate must have skill in operating heavy mobile construction and maintenance equipment and using tools for its servicing, maintenance, and minor repair.
  • The candidate must possess manual dexterity and demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • The candidate must have completed Grade 12 and possess considerable related experience in the operation and servicing of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Province of British Columbia Class 3 driver’s license with an Air Brake Endorsement.
