Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for providing leadership, support, and guidance to team members while encouraging initiative and supporting their development as engineers and technical leaders.

  • The candidate will be responsible for reviewing, enhancing, and developing methods, procedures, and technical standards to take advantage of new technology.
  • The candidate will be responsible for managing and training personnel in the use of modern design tools and advanced design systems in daily work.

  • The candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing an employee development program to maintain and cultivate required skills and expertise.
  • The candidate will promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, coaching and mentoring, and organizational awareness across the organization.
  • The candidate will be responsible for facilitating the development of employee soft skills such as persuasive influence, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
  • The candidate will be responsible for collaborating with Engineering Teams, Asset Planning, Interconnections, Technology, Project Delivery, Capital Construction, Real-time Operations (RTO), Stations Field Operations, and external service providers to support delivery of the overall work plan.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development of team and department objectives and performance measures and managing technical and operational performance to meet business needs.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development and enhancement of engineering processes, workflows, procedures, and quality assurance practices.
  • The candidate will be responsible for ensuring team adherence to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • The candidate will be responsible for promoting professional practice and ensuring compliance with the Professional Governance Act and Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.
  • The candidate will proactively undertake and/or significantly contribute to problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of customized solutions to complex engineering problems considering Safety by Design, value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting the Division Manager on various initiatives and contributing to divisional priorities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coaching and mentoring team members in investigating and analyzing challenging or unusual technical problems.
  • The candidate will lead meetings to resolve engineering issues and attend professional development events, including seminars, courses, and conferences, and present to different audiences.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian universities.
  • The candidate must have 10+ years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the transmission utility business including design standards, engineering and maintenance, technical report writing, and the ability to undertake technical design reviews.
  • The candidate must be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) or another Canadian regulatory body. The candidate shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education requirements, and code of ethics.
  • The candidate must have excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly technical writing, and the ability to communicate complex technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The candidate must demonstrate ability and passion in people management skills including conflict management, work leadership, technical direction, communication, team building, and coaching skills.
  • The candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to and discuss issues with individuals at all levels, from electricians to senior management.
  • The candidate will be required to demonstrate a strong understanding of project and task management processes.
  • The candidate will be required to demonstrate strong organizational and management skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • The candidate will be required to maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing as a condition of employment.
  • The candidate must maintain good standing with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) as a condition of employment.
