Job Description

  • The candidate must lead the Transmission Equipment Engineering Division within Transmission Engineering, focusing on substation equipment and underground transmission lines for BC Hydro’s transmission system, including station equipment, fire protection, station mechanical systems, project engineering, and cable design, while managing technical, operational, and strategic performance in support of BC Hydro’s mission, vision, and priorities.
  • The candidate must manage the technical, operational, and strategic performance of the Division in support of BC Hydro’s mission, vision, and priorities.
  • The candidate must ensure technical and leadership development of Division staff and build effective cross-disciplinary teams to support complex engineering projects.
  • he candidate must oversee engineering deliverables for complex projects as Owner’s Engineer, ensuring regulatory compliance, high collaboration, technical innovation, safety focus, and strong business acumen.
  • The candidate must be accountable for the operational performance of the Division, including developing and managing the business plan and division budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources, evaluating project feasibility based on resources and costs, and balancing workload within the Division.
  • The candidate must develop staffing, training, and professional development strategies along with technical succession plans to ensure continuity of expertise within the Division.
  • The candidate must establish performance expectations and define competency profiles for engineering disciplines within the Division.
  • The candidate must direct ongoing professional development of staff to develop and retain appropriate levels of expertise and competency.
  • The candidate must act as an experienced technical resource with a strong technical understanding of substation equipment, design, underground cable design, and other transmission disciplines, while supporting the development and application of engineering and quality assurance standards, promoting innovation, and ensuring compliance with MRS, EGBC, and safety standards and regulations.
  • The candidate must manage and maintain relationships between BC Hydro, vendors, and external engineering service providers, as well as internal relationships across Engineering divisions, Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery, PCM, Asset Planning and Sustainment, Operations, Category Management, Safety, MRS compliance, and other stakeholders.
  • The candidate must contribute to broader engineering initiatives, including the application of advanced tools and processes, Safety by Design, Mandatory Reliability Standards, and the development, support, and sustainment of design standards, equipment specifications, procurement practices, and engineering standards.
  • The candidate must support Safety by Design principles, Mandatory Reliability Standards, and the development of engineering design standards and equipment specifications.
  • The candidate must act as the Responsible Registrant for EGBC Professional Registrants within Transmission Equipment Engineering and ensure alignment with EGBC Professional Practice Guidelines and BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred), or another relevant discipline, from a Canadian university recognized and accredited by Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • The candidate must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • The candidate must have 15+ years of experience working in a utility-based engineering environment, including substantial experience in transmission systems, equipment specifications, design, safety requirements, and mandatory regulatory standards.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 8 years of direct or indirect people management experience.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to manage the successful delivery of engineering products through strong management, analytical, interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, supported by a customer service mindset.
  • The candidate must demonstrate decision-making skills that include sound risk management, business judgment, and technical judgment considerations.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, relationship management, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • The candidate must manage relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, identify engineering solutions that add value, and address competing interests.
  • The candidate must establish a high level of rapport with senior management and work collaboratively with asset planning, operations, regulatory, and other stakeholders to determine appropriate courses of action.
  • The candidate should have familiarity with transmission engineering tools and processes, mandatory reliability standards, safety standards, planning and design guides, contract equipment specifications, and tender evaluation processes.
  • The candidate must maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing as a condition of employment.
