Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for planning, assigning, scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled staff engaged in fleet servicing, repair, inspection, and maintenance.
- The candidate will be responsible for participating in hands-on repair and maintenance work as operationally required.
- The candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Preventive Maintenance Facility for municipal fleet assets, including fire apparatus and emergency vehicles.
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring fleet maintenance activities are completed in accordance with applicable safety, quality, inspection, and operational standards.
- The candidate will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement inspection and compliance processes.
- The candidate will be responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues and equipment malfunctions and verifying that all work performed meets required instructions, specifications, standards, and safety requirements.
- The candidate will be responsible for preparing and maintaining operational records, including vehicle damage reports, insurance documentation, maintenance records, and related reports.
- The candidate will be responsible for requesting materials, parts, and shop stock and ensuring the proper maintenance of shop tools, equipment, and facilities.
- The candidate will be responsible for reviewing specifications for new vehicles and equipment builds to support operational suitability, standardization, maintainability, lifecycle performance, and regulatory compliance.
- The candidate will be responsible for assisting in developing and implementing improved work methods, maintenance practices, and supervisory techniques.
- The candidate will be responsible for allocating work, providing direction, supporting employee development, and addressing performance and conduct issues as required.
- The candidate will be responsible for assisting with and contributing to employee performance evaluations for staff within the work unit.
- The candidate will be responsible for controlling and maintaining a small automotive stores section.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must have thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
- The candidate must have considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety practices specific to the trade, the functions of the Garage, and the requirements of those served by it.
- The candidate must have considerable knowledge of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement processes, inspection requirements, and related compliance practices applicable to municipal fleet operations.
- The candidate must have sound knowledge of preventive maintenance principles and practices related to the operation of a preventive maintenance facility.
- The candidate must have sound knowledge of fleet specification development and review processes for new vehicle and equipment builds.
- The candidate must have sound knowledge of maintenance practices, standards, and repair considerations for fire apparatus and emergency response vehicles.
- The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of insurance claim processes, vehicle damage reporting, repair coordination, and municipal fleet administration.
- The candidate must be able to plan, lay out, supervise, and participate in the work of a number of subordinates while ensuring the economical and efficient use of time, equipment, and materials.
- The candidate must be able to prepare reports and records, order parts and material, and estimate time and material requirements.
- The candidate must be able to read and interpret blueprints and work sketches.
- The candidate must be able to establish and maintain effective work relationships with subordinates and other employees.
- The candidate must demonstrate skill in the care and use of tools, machinery, and equipment used in the work supervised.
- The candidate must have completed Grade 12 and a recognized Mechanic trade apprenticeship, along with considerable experience in the mechanical trade in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- The candidate must hold a valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia with Air Brake Certification.
- The candidate must hold a valid B.C. Certificate of Qualification – Red Seal in Heavy Duty, Truck and Transport, or Automotive.
- The candidate must hold a valid Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification.
