Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for leading the design of telecom networks and circuits to ensure the reliability, performance, and security required to support real-time grid operations and future utility technologies.
- The candidate will be responsible for acting as the Professional of Record (PoR) for internal designs and serving as Owner’s Engineer for external engineering service provider submissions.
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring every design meets stringent safety, technical, and regulatory requirements while maintaining engineering excellence.
- The candidate must provide design calculations, drawings, and installation and circuit implementation documentation for the construction of telecom infrastructure, including microwave radio links, fiber optic networks, WiMAX radio networks, satellite communications, Power Line Carrier links, LTE systems, leased facilities, IP/MPLS networks, digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexers, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio systems, teleprotection systems, and -48 VDC power systems.
- The candidate must design and implement IP and MPLS network architectures for utility telecommunications systems, including network planning, configuration, laboratory validation, interoperability testing, migration execution, advanced QoS and traffic-engineering solutions, engineering documentation, field validation, and technical assistance during cutovers for mission-critical services such as SCADA and protection systems.
- The candidate will be responsible for working closely with Project Managers and construction teams to achieve safety, cost, and milestone objectives.
- The candidate will be responsible for resolving complex field issues encountered during project execution.

- The candidate will be responsible for conducting specialized engineering studies and detailed technical investigations to resolve complex issues in transport networks, SCADA communications, protection circuits, and cybersecurity-related telecom infrastructure.
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring all engineering work complies with EGBC requirements, organizational standards, and industry best practices.
- The candidate must participate in site visits and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to confirm design intent, support field implementation, and contribute to maintenance and emergency restoration activities when critical telecom systems are impacted.
Job Requirements
- The candidate will be required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- The candidate must be registered as a P.Eng. or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), registered as a P.Eng. or EIT in another Canadian province or internationally, or be able to demonstrate active pursuit of registration with EGBC.
- The candidate must have experience designing and supporting telecom technologies such as Microwave radio links, fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN), WiMAX radio networks, satellite communications, Power Line Carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, Digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexers, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio systems, teleprotection systems, -48V DC power systems and grounding, and TDM (SONET/PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits, including circuits carrying teleprotection and RAS.
- The candidate must have experience in IP/MPLS architecture and design covering IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, EVPN, Segment Routing, QoS, Traffic Engineering, and security across large-scale LAN/WAN environments.
- The candidate must have experience configuring and deploying Nokia IP/MPLS platforms, including L2/L3VPN and QoS technologies.
- The candidate should possess a Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE) certification, which will be considered an asset.
- The candidate should possess a Nokia NRS II (Nokia Network Routing Specialist) Certification or a Nokia Certified Service Routing Architect (SRA) certification, which will be considered assets.
- The candidate must possess a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience to qualify for the Senior Engineer level.
- The candidate must have at least 4 years of relevant industry experience to be eligible for the Engineer 2 position.
- The candidate with less experience will be considered for an Engineer 1 role provided they are an EIT with EGBC or eligible for EIT registration with EGBC.
- The candidate will be required to possess strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- The candidate must be able to work independently, take initiative on complex problems, and seek guidance when necessary.
- The candidate will be required to demonstrate knowledge of project management practices, contract management principles, and construction oversight activities.
- The candidate will be required to maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing for site visits and field support activities.

Work conditions
- The candidate will be required to work from the Edmonds Campus in Burnaby, BC under a hybrid schedule that requires a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.
- The candidate will be required to travel occasionally throughout British Columbia to support the provincial transmission system.
