Job Description

  • The candidate must provide power system planning expertise and leadership in developing short- and long-term Distribution system plans to optimize system performance considering load growth, customer requirements, operational needs, corporate objectives, and strategic goals.
  • The candidate must lead technical and economic planning studies to identify Distribution system requirements for reliable and efficient load supply.
  • The candidate must proactively identify problems, mitigate risks, and develop original solutions to complex or emerging power system technical and business issues.
  • The candidate must provide project leadership to meet goals, schedules, and budgets while assigning work and providing technical guidance to engineers and support staff.
  • The candidate will be responsible for reviewing the work of technical staff, consultants, and contractors to ensure accuracy, required results, and compliance with accepted engineering practices.
  • The candidate will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of business objectives and performance measures.
  • The candidate will be responsible for leading and providing expert input while representing Distribution Asset Planning in public consultation and regulatory processes.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing briefing notes on complex technical and business issues to support senior management and regulatory responses.
  • The candidate will be responsible for fostering collaboration and building strong working relationships within planning teams and across BC Hydro.
  • The candidate will lead, develop, maintain, and strengthen relationships with external communities, municipalities, consultants, technical societies and associations, industry interest groups, suppliers, and other utilities.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a recognized Electrical Engineering degree and be registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience with a focus on power system planning and operations across generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of electric utility and power system modelling concepts.
  • The candidate must possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to conduct negotiations, deliver presentations to technical and non-technical audiences, prepare technical papers and reports, and liaise with internal and external experts.
  • The candidate must have excellent leadership, organizational, team building, and project management skills including cost control and project administration.
  • The candidate must demonstrate ability to think independently, strategically, and laterally to identify improvement opportunities and drive change.
  • Knowledge of smart grid technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems, Distributed Energy Integration, EV charging systems, and non-wires alternatives is considered an asset.
