Job Description

  • The candidate must identify and advise cross-functional partners on legal obligations related to data disclosures and governance, platform/system safety and integrity, emerging technologies (including artificial intelligence (“AI”)), and applicable compliance requirements.
  • The candidate will lead the development, implementation, and improvement of a comprehensive AI governance framework to support ethical and responsible AI use across the organization.
  • The candidate must collaborate and coordinate with cross-functional partners to ensure seamless integration of AI and data governance compliance programs.
  • The candidate will provide strategic guidance on emerging technologies, use of those technologies, and services including the implementation of new products and services relating to data governance and AI compliance legal risks.
  • The candidate must complete thorough risk assessments to identify potential legal and regulatory compliance issues and develop mitigation strategies.
  • The candidate will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the AI governance framework, making adjustments based on evolving technologies, business needs, and regulatory landscapes.
  • The candidate will maintain company-wide policies, guidelines, and practices on applicable AI and data governance legal matters.
  • The candidate must explain complex information to business partners in a straightforward and comprehensive manner.
  • The candidate must review, monitor, and provide guidance on regulatory developments around data governance and AI.
  • The candidate will draft commercial contract clauses and obligations related to emerging technology, including AI.
  • The candidate will develop and implement education curriculum and training plans for the larger legal team and cross-functional business partners related to AI developments, impacts, and potential risks to the organization.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a J.D. or bachelor’s degree in law from an accredited institution.
  • The candidate must be a current member in good standing of the Washington State or British Columbia law society (or other Canadian or US jurisdiction).
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant legal technology (including some artificial intelligence), data governance, and/or cybersecurity experience; in-house or corporate legal experience is an asset.
  • The candidate must have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • The candidate must have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple matters simultaneously in an entrepreneurial, rapidly scaling and changing environment.
  • The candidate must have keen attention to detail, the ability to execute requested assignments as part of a team, and excellent organizational skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate good judgment and understand when to ask for guidance or input.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to balance compliance and risk-minimization with a pragmatic, tech-savvy, and solutions-oriented approach.
  • The candidate must have excellent analytical, written, verbal, research, and communication skills.
