Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for carrying out extension, improvement, alteration, removal, and end-of-life design work for BC Hydro and customer-driven distribution projects involving single and three phase overhead, civil, and underground primary equipment (including automated equipment), and secondary/service work up to 1600A services, excluding primary services and feeder civil/underground electrical work.
- The candidate must conduct field studies for a variety of distribution projects.
- The candidate will work closely with internal and external stakeholders and customers impacted by design services.
- The candidate may be required to support and act as a subject matter expert for the Design Technician role and related area of expertise.
- The candidate will be responsible for portfolio management and coordination of assigned design projects.
- The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that designs comply with regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations, and construction standards, while coordinating with engineers and construction crews to validate constructability and evaluate future operational and maintenance impacts, and documenting safety risks before construction.
- The candidate will perform some or all duties of lower-level Distribution Design roles.
- The candidate must perform duties of a minor nature related to the above responsibilities that do not affect the job rating.
Job Requirements
- The candidate should have a high school diploma with Math 12, English 12, and Physics 11 (or equivalent), along with completion of Electrical Utility Fundamentals (or equivalent), a BC Electrical Code course (or equivalent), and accredited courses in DC and AC electrical theory.
- The candidate should hold a Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Electrical Engineering Technology (or equivalent electrical discipline) from a recognized Canadian educational institute.
- The candidate should have an International Electrical or Canadian Non-Electrical Degree, Diploma, or Certificate with an electrical technician accreditation through a provincial regulatory body, such as Certified Technician (CTech) through ASTTBC.
- The candidate must have at least three (3) years of electrical utility design experience, including a minimum of one (1) year at or equivalent to a fully qualified BC Hydro Distribution Design Technician level.
- The candidate must have completed BC Hydro’s Distribution Design Technician level training program.
- The candidate must hold a valid class five (5) driver’s licence.

- The candidate will be required to successfully complete pre-employment alcohol and drug testing as a condition of employment for this safety-sensitive position.
Work conditions and physical capabilities
- The candidate will perform approximately 40% of duties outside the office, with occasional overnight travel and frequent work at construction sites.
- The candidate will be required to work regularly at remote locations, including walking over rough terrain.
- The candidate should be prepared for occasional exposure to wildlife, dogs, and other hazards encountered at job sites.
- The candidate is required to handle occasional exposure to irate customers.
- The candidate must occasionally carry tools such as stakes and hammers and light survey equipment.
- The candidate must be regularly exposed to all types of weather conditions while driving to job sites and performing field work.
- The candidate may be required to travel in light aircraft, helicopters, boats, or all-terrain vehicles.
- The candidate is required to provide remote support for design work across the province when needed.
