Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law.
  • The candidate will be responsible for advising on the legislative Acts and proceedings of the Legislature.
  • The candidate will be responsible for advising the heads of Ministries of the government on all matters of law connected with the Ministries.
  • The candidate will be responsible for undertaking the conduct of all litigation for or against the Crown.
  • The candidate will be responsible for drafting and settling agreements and documents to be executed by the Crown.
  • The candidate will deliver professional legal advice to the government in the areas assigned to the lawyer.
  • The candidate will assist the government as a general legal advisor in developing its policy, programs, and legislation in the field assigned to the lawyer.
  • The candidate will maintain an active and informed presence in the related areas of law affecting government.
  • The candidate will achieve and maintain high professional standards.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must be eligible for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • The candidate’s level will depend on years of call, with six to 11 years of call required for PEA Legal Counsel 2.
  • The candidate must have current civil litigation experience, including the conduct of actions, petitions, and applications.
  • Current civil litigation experience refers to experience typically gained by a lawyer who has worked primarily as litigation counsel for the four years preceding the application and has actively contributed to litigation matters or participated as part of a litigation team.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with current experience in Canadian law relating to Aboriginal rights and title issues.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with current experience in Canadian constitutional and/or administrative law.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience conducting and managing complex civil litigation as litigation counsel, with significant contributions as part of a litigation team.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
