Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for the disinfection and sterilization of glassware and laboratory ware used by diagnostic laboratory sections.
  • The candidate will be responsible for performing basic laboratory housekeeping activities, including disinfection, filing, temperature monitoring, recyclables removal, and garbage disposal across multiple laboratory sections.
  • The candidate will be responsible for removing biohazardous waste from laboratory sections and preparing the waste for collection by a commercial disposal company.
  • The candidate will be responsible for delivering consumable goods to laboratory sections and unpacking and stocking supplies within the general laboratory supply area.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining general stores inventory, receiving laboratory consumables as a qualified receiver, monitoring stock levels, and initiating supply orders.
  • The candidate will be responsible for delivering diagnostic specimens from specimen pick-up areas to various laboratory sections.
  • The candidate will be responsible for performing operational maintenance on laboratory equipment, including ultralow freezers, autoclaves, and dishwashers.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing broths, agars, and reagents as directed by laboratory personnel.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing general laboratory support functions as directed by senior laboratory personnel, Section Heads, and Directors of PAHB.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have successfully completed Grade 12 or hold an equivalent qualification.
  • The candidate must have completed a minimum of one year of full-time post-secondary coursework in Biological Sciences, Applied Technology, or an equivalent field.
  • The candidate must have experience working with technical equipment, including autoclaves, dishwashers, glassware dryers, mixers, fridges, freezers, and/or incubators in a human or veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • The candidate must possess experience preparing agars, broths, and/or reagents.
  • The candidate must possess experience working with, handling, and properly disposing of biohazardous waste in a laboratory setting.
  • Candidates with a minimum one-year diploma in Biological Sciences, Applied Technology, or an equivalent discipline are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience as a laboratory assistant in a human or veterinary diagnostic laboratory are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience in an ISO 17025 or AAVLD accredited facility are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience supporting laboratory quality assurance programs are preferred.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.

  • The candidate must undergo a Criminal Record Check (CRC) as part of the hiring process.

Work conditions and physical capabilities

  • The candidate must demonstrate a willingness to meet Work Safe BC safety standards, including maintaining required laboratory safety training and certifications.
  • The candidate must demonstrate a willingness to participate in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program to support the maintenance of AAVLD and SCC accreditation.
  • The candidate must be willing to work irregular hours and remain available to the Directors, Executive Director, and laboratory staff during outbreaks and emergencies.
  • The candidate must be able to perform repetitive motions, including bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 40 lbs. on a continuous basis.
  • The candidate must be willing to work in Containment Level 2 and Containment Level 3 laboratories, foreign animal disease environments, or adjacent to laboratories with potential exposure to pathogen-related risks.
