Job Description

  • The candidate must provide direct clinical services such as intake, assessment, treatment, and crisis intervention, including consultation and liaison with community agencies, schools, hospitals, and other ministry programs.
  • The candidate must administer and score mental health-related test instruments appropriate to the profession.
  • The candidate must provide comprehensive assessment and treatment planning and conduct individual, group, and parent-child relational therapy.
  • The candidate must conduct suicide assessments and crisis interventions.
  • The candidate must maintain basic knowledge of psychotropic medications as prescribed by a physician and remain aware of their effects.
  • The candidate must maintain appropriate clinical, client, and administrative records.
  • The candidate must promote and maintain effective working relationships with clients and families, social workers, foster parents, physicians, schools, and hospitals to coordinate services, secure input, cooperation, resolve conflicts, and influence outcomes.
  • The candidate must provide community consultation and deliver educational services and training on emotional and behavioural disturbances from a neurodevelopmental, trauma-informed, and attachment-based lens.
  • The candidate must establish trust with children and youth and engage them at their stage of readiness for change.
  • The candidate must provide individual clinical services to children and youth with complex and/or multiple diagnoses, including developmental trauma, attachment concerns, and social, emotional, and behavioural concerns.
  • The candidate must provide assertive case management and lead client care teams in consensus-based decision-making to collaboratively create treatment plans that increase environmental and relational stability and support client success across settings such as home and school, while monitoring and evaluating outcomes.
  • The candidate must provide education and consultation on developmental trauma, attachment, brain development, and complex care and intervention theory and strategies to community agencies and service providers, including physicians, schools, hospitals, foster parents, child protection staff, and other MCFD social workers.
  • The candidate must provide workshops and training for MCFD staff and community partners, including schools, physicians, foster parents, and hospitals, on developmental trauma, attachment, brain development, and complex care and intervention.
  • The candidate must provide suggestions and input into various stages of child protection decision-making processes to promote the mental well-being of the child, youth, and/or family.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must possess a Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Educational Counselling, Clinical Counselling, Clinical Psychology, or Child and Youth Care, or a comparable graduate degree in a related field.
  • The candidate must confirm that any degree obtained outside of Canada has been assessed for equivalency through International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES) and must provide a basic report by the closing date of the posting to be considered.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of one (1) year full-time equivalent experience working with children, youth, and their families, with responsibility for providing a wide range of community-based mental health services.
  • The candidate must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with no restriction or an equivalent licence from another Canadian province.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with two (2) years or more experience working with children, youth, and their families, with responsibility for providing a wide range of community-based mental health services.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience providing direct interventions related to trauma-based behaviours of children and youth.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience working with Indigenous children, youth, and families providing mental health services.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have completed formal post-graduate trauma training focusing on neurodevelopment and attachment, such as the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (Child Trauma Academy) and/or the Complex Trauma Certificate (JIBC).
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have completed training in infant mental health and parent-child relational interventions and assessment tools such as Watch, Wait and Wonder, Circle of Security, and AMBIANCE-Brief measure.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience facilitating presentations on trauma-informed material to social workers, caregivers, educators, and other professionals involved in the care and treatment of complex children and youth.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience providing a variety of outreach and community-based work-related activities.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
