Job Description

  • The candidate will develop and supervise comprehensive care plans by ensuring children and caregivers contribute to the planning process, informing caregivers of their responsibilities, monitoring placements, and providing guidance to address the child’s challenging behaviours.
  • The candidate will support children in care by assisting with entry into care, placement, and permanency matters, ensuring the child’s rights are upheld in accordance with legislation and policies, providing consent for child activities, ensuring birthdays and other significant events are celebrated, and overseeing all payments.
  • The candidate will be responsible for selecting or supporting the selection of an appropriate adoption home and preparing the child for placement.
  • The candidate will be responsible for helping children prepare for discharge and assisting youth throughout the post-discharge period.
  • The candidate will be responsible for encouraging Indigenous community involvement while ensuring the child’s cultural identity is preserved.
  • The candidate will work with Child Protection Workers on case management, legal and court proceedings, and administrative and procedural matters by providing information on the plan of care, contributing to risk assessments, and assisting the child in preparing for court proceedings.
  • The candidate will assist youth in obtaining legal counsel and provide guardianship support throughout Young Offenders Act proceedings.
  • The candidate must notify the Public Trustee of injuries or legal proceedings involving children in custody while investigating and resolving complaints.
  • The candidate will be responsible for representing each child on an interdisciplinary team to support integrated service delivery and contribute information for developing a family service plan.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Social Work or Child & Youth Care.
  • The candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology or a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, including the completion of a practicum in family and child welfare.
  • The candidate must be an in-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employee holding a regular SPO 24โ€“30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • The candidate will be considered equivalent if they are a registered member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or possess a letter from the College confirming approval of their registration application.
  • The candidate must confirm that if their degree was obtained outside of Canada, it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES).
  • The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field, a Bachelor’s degree with a Major or Honors in a Human Services field, or a Master’s-level Graduate Certificate or Diploma in a Human Services field completed after an unrelated Bachelor’s degree.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of one year of related or job-specific work experience.
  • The candidate will be considered if they possess an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who possess the preferred educational credentials and/or are in-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees holding a regular SPO 24โ€“30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are eligible for delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Preference may be given to applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Mรฉtis, or Inuit) and possess the required combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates who have not yet graduated may be eligible for consideration if they have completed all required coursework and submit a letter from their educational institution confirming completion of the degree requirements.
  • The candidate will be required to hold and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence without restrictions or an equivalent licence from another Canadian province.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
