Job Description
- Fire Management Officer leads fire programs and operations in Banff National Park
- Works in field-based, on-site role with daily presence required
- Supports wildfire response, fuel management, and prescribed fire planning
- Works in outdoor environments with travel and varied terrain
- The employment term will start in April 2026 and continue until March 2028 with an option to extend the contract.
- The job requires working nonstandard hours which include both weekend shifts and holiday shifts.
Responsibilities
- Lead fire management programs and operations
- Manage wildfire response, prescribed fire, and fuel management activities
- Supervise fire line operations and field duties
- Collect and analyze fire-related data
- Manage contracts related to fire activities
- Develop and maintain partnerships in fire management
- Prepare technical reports and plans
- Monitor weather and fire conditions and take action
- Train and guide fire operations staff
- Represent the company in fire-related matters
Requirements
- Graduation with a degree in environmental or natural sciences or a related field is required.
- Certification in S-230 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behaviour or equivalent is required.
- Experience in collecting and analyzing fire management data is required.
- Experience in managing fire-related contracts is required.
- Recent and significant experience in building partnerships in fire management is required.
- Recent and significant leadership experience in wildfire response and risk reduction is required.
- Experience in writing technical fire management reports and plans is required.
- Recent and significant experience in fire line supervision is required.
- Experience working in field conditions and performing fire line duties is required.
- Knowledge of Parks Canada’s mandate and conservation goals is required.
- Knowledge of fire management strategies, systems, and safety practices is required.
- Driver’s licence is required.
- First aid and CPR certification are required.
- Can travel, work irregular hours and operate in remote areas is required.
