Job Description
- The candidate will be responsible for conducting prosecutions of offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes, regulations, and federal statutes from inception to conclusion as assigned.
- The candidate will be responsible for reviewing materials prepared by enforcement and investigative agencies to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to support charges, identify appropriate charges, and decide whether to proceed by indictment or summary process in accordance with BCPS policy.
- The candidate will prepare witnesses for court and deal with witnesses, victims, and their families in a considerate and courteous manner.
- The candidate will be responsible for applying to the court when appropriate to protect and support victims and witnesses, seeking non-contact conditions in bail and probation orders, and making applications for restitution.
- The candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies regarding the prosecution of offences and, where appropriate, the conduct of investigations.
- The candidate will be responsible for responding to general public inquiries related to criminal law and the prosecution of offences.
- The candidate will be responsible for participating in committees that work to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the administration of justice as directed or assigned.
- The candidate will be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with members of the Bar, court staff, enforcement agencies, and other participants in the justice system.
- The candidate will be responsible for maintaining current knowledge of applicable laws and procedures and attending appropriate continuing education programs.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar.
- The candidate will be required to be in their 6th to 11th year of call and possess at least two (2) years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including experience in the area of criminal law, to qualify for Crown Counsel Level 2.
- The candidate will be required to be in their 12th year of call or greater and possess at least two (2) years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including experience in criminal law, to qualify for Crown Counsel Level 3.
- The candidate must have significant criminal trial experience.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience prosecuting offences under the Criminal Code of Canada or federal statutes prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
- The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
