Job Description
- This is a full time temporary 12 month role with rotating 12 hour shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- The position is based at Fire and Paramedic Headquarters and EMS Station 53 in Toronto.
- The role includes emergency call taking, patient triage and coordination of paramedic responses across the city.
- Employees work closely with paramedics, allied emergency services and dispatch teams in a fast moving public safety environment.
Responsibilities
- Receive and process emergency and non emergency ambulance service requests.
- Provide customer service support to callers, co-workers and emergency personnel.
- Supervise emergency incidents using the Medical Priority Dispatch System.
- Dispatch emergency medical and support vehicles to active calls.
- Monitor dispatch systems, communication tools and vehicle locations continuously.
- Coordinate non emergency transfers and out of town requests.
- Confirm caller information and enter details into dispatch systems.
- Share updated information with dispatch teams and allied agencies.
- Follow all dispatch protocols, procedures and training standards.
- Maintain communication with neighboring ambulance communication centres.
- Build cooperative working relationships with emergency service personnel.
- Meet Toronto Paramedic Services and Ministry of Health performance standards.
- Protect patient information according to PHIPA regulations.
Requirements
- Must hold a Grade 12 diploma or approved equivalent education and work history combination.
- Postsecondary education in areas such as 911 telecommunications, paramedicine, nursing, social services, psychology, fire services or police foundations would be considered an asset.
- Considerable work history in fast paced and complex customer service environments is required.
- Must hold a current CPR Level C certification issued no earlier than September 16, 2025 before the start date.
- You must finish the Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification through IAED, before you start employment before the job actually begins.
- You must type at least 35 words per minute with 90% correctness, meaning very few errors and steady accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal English interaction skills under stressful conditions are required.
- You have to be willing to study and keep a strong grip on Toronto streets, highways, transit systems and nearby medical facilities.
- Must be comfortable working for long periods connected to dispatch systems and telephones.
- Hearing and vision suitable for dispatch work including colour vision are required.
- Can work with handling public relations matters professionally with callers, emergency personnel and co workers.
- Must be comfortable using dispatch systems, decision support software and radio communication systems.
- Can work with handling confidential information and protected records responsibly.
- Strong decision making skills during emergency situations are required.
- Must be comfortable responding to rapidly changing situations and technology systems.
- Can work with applying learned dispatch skills in real time situations.
- Strong interaction skills and teamwork skills are required.
