Job Description

  • The candidate must be able to operate sewing machines and sew by hand.
  • The candidate will be required to create, alter, or re-style fur garments and accessories.
  • The candidate will be expected to create made-to-measure garments in accordance with customer and manufacturing specifications.
  • The candidate will be responsible for fitting, altering, repairing, and making made-to-measure clothing to customers’ and clothing manufacturers’ specifications and fit, as well as applying garment design, construction, and styling principles.
  • The candidate will be required to mark, cut, and sew fabric.
  • The candidate will be required to design patterns to fit measurements.
  • The candidate will be required to select and modify commercial patterns to meet the specifications and fit requirements of customers and clothing manufacturers.
  • The candidate will be expected to keep sewing machines and other equipment in good working order.
  • The candidate will be responsible for labelling customers’ garments and articles as well as recording the necessary alterations.
  • The candidate will be required to use irons and pressing machines to remove creases from clothing and other items.
  • The candidate will be required to use rippers or razor blades to remove stitches from garments to be altered.
  • Using needles and thread or sewing machines, the candidate will assemble garment parts and connect them together with basting stitches.
  • The candidate must consult with customers to determine the types of materials and garment styles desired.
  • The candidate will be expected to create, copy, or adapt garment designs, as well as design patterns to fit measurements, using knowledge of garment design, construction, styling, and fabric.
  • The candidate will be required to make changes to their garment style, such as tapering pant legs, narrowing lapels, and adding or removing padding.
  • In order to finish garments, the candidate will be required to sew buttonholes and attach buttons.
  • The candidate will be required to use scissors to trim excess material.
  • The candidate must estimate the cost of making a garment based on factors such as time and material requirements.
  • The candidate must interpret designs, sketches, and samples in order to determine pattern specifications.
  • The candidate will be required to lubricate, clean, or make minor repairs to machine parts in order to keep the machine operational.
