Job Description
- The candidate must perform extension, improvement, alteration, removal, and end-of-life design work for BC Hydro and customer-driven distribution projects and programs.
- The candidate must perform work on single and three-phase overhead primary equipment and assets, excluding automated equipment.
- The candidate must perform single-phase civil and underground primary work.
- The candidate must perform single-phase overhead, civil, and underground secondary and service work up to 600A, including low profile transformers (LPTs).
- The candidate must perform three-phase overhead, civil, and underground secondary and service work up to 400A at 347/600V and 800A at 120/208V, excluding installation or replacement of pad-mounted transformers (PMTs).
- The candidate must conduct field studies for a variety of distribution projects.
- The candidate is required to coordinate with internal and external customers and stakeholders impacted by design services.
- The candidate may support and act as a subject matter expert related to the Design Representative role and area of expertise.
- The candidate must manage the portfolio and coordinate assigned design projects.
- The candidate must ensure designs meet appropriate regulatory and stakeholder requirements and construction standards, and engage with Engineers or construction crews to validate constructability and operational impact, while addressing and documenting known safety risks prior to construction.
- The candidate must perform some or all duties of the Distribution Design Assistant job.
- The candidate must perform duties of a minor nature related to the above responsibilities that do not affect the job rating.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must hold a high school diploma with Math 12, English 12, and Physics 11 (or equivalent courses).
- The candidate must have completed Electrical Utility Fundamentals (or equivalent) and a BC Electrical Code course (or equivalent).
- The candidate must hold a Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Electrical Engineering Technology (or equivalent electrical discipline) from a Canadian Educational Institute.
- The candidate must hold an International Electrical or Canadian Non-Electrical Degree, Diploma, or Certificate with electrical Technician accreditation through a provincial regulatory body such as CTech through ASTTBC.
- The candidate must have two (2) years of demonstrated electrical utility design experience at or equivalent to a fully qualified BC Hydro Distribution Design Rep.
- The candidate must have completed BC Hydro’s Distribution Design Rep level training program.
- The candidate must hold a valid class five (5) driver’s licence.

- The candidate will be required to successfully complete pre-employment alcohol and drug testing as a condition of employment for this safety-sensitive position.
Work conditions and physical capabilities
- The candidate must perform approximately 50% of the work outside the office with occasional overnight travel.
- The candidate must frequently work at construction sites.
- The candidate must regularly work at remote locations, including walking over rough terrain.
- The candidate must be prepared for occasional exposure to wild animals, dogs, and other job site hazards during field work.
- The candidate is required to handle occasional exposure to irate customers.
- The candidate must occasionally carry tools such as stakes and hammers and light survey equipment.
- The candidate must be regularly exposed to all types of weather conditions while driving to job sites and performing field work.
- The candidate may be required to travel in light aircraft, helicopters, boats, or all-terrain vehicles.
- The candidate is required to provide remote support for design work across the province when needed.
