Job Description

  • The candidate will conduct prosecutions of offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes from inception to conclusion as assigned.
  • The candidate will review material prepared by enforcement and investigative agencies to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to support charges, which charges should be laid, and whether to proceed by indictment or summary process pursuant to BCPS policy.
  • The candidate will prepare witnesses for court and deal with witnesses, victims, and their families in a considerate and courteous manner.
  • The candidate will apply to the court where appropriate for protection and support of victims and witnesses, seek non-contact terms in bail and probation orders, and make application for restitution.
  • The candidate will provide legal advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies in relation to the prosecution of offences and, where appropriate, the conduct of investigations.
  • The candidate will answer general inquiries from the public relating to criminal law or the prosecution of offences.
  • The candidate will participate in committees that endeavour to make the administration of justice more efficient or effective as directed or assigned.
  • The candidate will maintain an effective working relationship with other members of the Bar, court staff, enforcement agencies, and other participants in the justice system.
  • The candidate will maintain current knowledge and understanding of law and procedures and attend appropriate continuing education programs.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar.
  • The candidate must be in their 6th to 11th year of call and possess a minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including experience in Criminal Law.
  • The candidate must possess significant trial experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are lawyers with 8 or more years of experience.
  • Preference may be given to lawyers with recent (within the last 3 years) and significant criminal trial experience.
  • Preference may be given to lawyers with criminal prosecution experience.
  • Preference may be given to lawyers who speak French and are competent to conduct trials in French.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
