Job Description
- The candidate will be part of the Prosecution Support Unit (PSU), which provides litigation support to Crown Counsel on constitutional questions and other novel or complex legal issues.
- The candidate will be required to provide varied forms of assistance, including initial consultation, legal research, preparation of written arguments, co-counselling, or conducting applications within PSU.
- The candidate will assist in achieving effective and mutually acceptable arrangements for addressing legal issues.
- The candidate will support PSU in providing advice and litigation support on all aspects of firearms charges, prosecutions, and bilingual prosecutions.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar.
- The candidate must demonstrate eligibility as Crown Counsel Level 2, with 6–11 years of call and at least 3 years of recent criminal law experience in Canada.
- The candidate must demonstrate eligibility as Crown Counsel Level 3, with 12 or more years of call and at least 3 years of recent criminal law experience in Canada.
- The candidate must be willing to travel and ensure transportation arrangements are consistent with ministry operational requirements.
- The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
Preference may be given to lawyers with one (1) or more of the following:
- The candidate must have constitutional litigation experience, including trial and/or appellate work.
- The candidate must have significant experience in conducting criminal trials involving complex legal or admissibility issues.
- The candidate must have significant experience in legal research, writing, and/or education.
- The candidate must have recent (within the last 3 years) criminal appellate litigation experience.
- The candidate must have experience appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada.
- The candidate must have criminal prosecution experience.
- The candidate must have experience arguing complex issues, including novel Charter issues.
- The candidate must have eight or more years of recent criminal law experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.
- The candidate is required to demonstrate French language proficiency at a professional legal working level in both oral and written communication.
