Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for responding to notifications of sudden and unexpected deaths on a 24-hour basis while on call.
  • The candidate will be responsible for gathering information to establish the identity of the deceased and determine how, when, where, and by what means he/she/they died, including attending scenes of death and conducting a head-to-toe examination of the body.
  • The candidate will provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and respectful service that acknowledges different cultural traditions and laws.
  • The candidate will enter and update accurate information in the Coroners Service case management system in a timely manner to facilitate the transfer of jurisdiction to the appropriate investigative unit using the established algorithm.
  • The candidate will be responsible for exercising legislative power to access locations and examine deceased persons and records related to an investigation.
  • The candidate will initiate and maintain effective relationships with agencies, organizations, and institutions that have a vested interest in the death investigation.
  • The candidate will contribute to the positive image of the Province of British Columbia, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and the BC Coroners Service by providing prompt, courteous, and effective service to the public in connection with the administration of the BC Coroners Act and related statutes dealing with death.
  • The candidate will report any significant cases or cases likely to become controversial or high profile to the Senior Coroner or Unit Director.
  • The candidate will perform any other duties assigned by the Senior Coroner or Unit Director.
  • The candidate will conclude their portion of the investigation by waiving certification of death to a physician in cases of expected natural death or by documenting initial findings in an electronic case management system for transfer to a full-time Coroner when further investigation is required.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have completed an undergraduate degree in health, legal, social sciences, or a related field, along with five (5) years of experience.
  • The candidate may be considered if they have an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience working collaboratively with multiple agencies.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience producing a variety of documents, including case notes, briefing materials, and reports.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating, and interpreting information from diverse sources.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience effectively communicating with individuals in sensitive or emotional circumstances.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with investigative case management and/or field experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous, including First Nations, Métis, or Inuit.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
  • The candidate must reside within the service area associated with the position location applied for.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence and have access to a personal vehicle that is maintained in good and safe working condition with appropriate insurance at all times while on-call.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to accurately document scene events through head-to-toe examinations, case notes, and photographic evidence.
  • The candidate will be required to communicate professionally and effectively with individuals experiencing sensitive or emotional situations.
  • The candidate will be required to practice cultural humility and contribute to a culturally safe environment for families of the deceased, stakeholders, and colleagues.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to manage sensitive, graphic, and confidential information.
  • The candidate must have internet access as a condition of employment and possess a strong working knowledge of computer technologies, including the ability to enter data into the BCCS database.
  • The candidate may be required to attend autopsies as part of the role.
  • The candidate must have an acceptable working knowledge of medical terminology or successfully complete a medical terminology course within the first six (6) months of employment.

  • The candidate must undergo and pass an Enhanced Security Screening as a condition of employment.

Work conditions

  • The candidate must be physically able to attend a variety of scenes and work in challenging environments, including accessing scenes on foot in wilderness areas, elevated terrain, and locations requiring long-distance travel.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to travel throughout the designated geographic area at any time of day and in varying weather conditions while on-call.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to routinely deal with traumatic death scenes, including deceased persons with catastrophic injuries and/or decomposition.
  • The candidate must be willing and available 24 hours per day during the assigned on-call period and for consultation with a Senior Coroner and/or the Unit Director following the on-call shift.
