Job Description
- The role of Animal Control Officer supports animal investigations by helping enforce law and animal safety services across Toronto.
- This is a full time role with permanent and temporary vacancies available at multiple Toronto Animal Services locations.
- Staff work rotating day, afternoon and night shifts across a seven day routine.
- The role includes field inspections, animal handling, rescue support and public interaction services.
- Employees work closely with animal services teams, public agencies and enforcement staff across Toronto.
- The position includes hands-on work with domestic, exotic and wildlife animals in different environments.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections and investigations related to animal complaints and by law violations.
- Review complaints connected to dangerous dogs, animal care and animal noise issues.
- Conduct joint inspections with City divisions, law enforcement agencies and provincial groups.
- Send Provincial Offences Act notices for urgent cases.
- Gather, document and store investigation evidence including photos and videos.
- Attend court proceedings and provide evidence when required.
- Capture, handle and transport animals- domestic, exotic and wild animals safely.
- Remove animal cadavers from public and private property when needed.
- Provide care for animals in custody including feeding, watering and health observation.
- Assist with euthanasia procedures under Veterinarian direction.
- Deliver public education programs and promote responsible pet ownership.
- Maintain animal services equipment, vehicles and supplies in clean and safe condition.
- Use computerized systems to manage animal service records and data.
- Operate pathological incinerator equipment when required.
Requirements
- Post secondary education in Law Enforcement, Municipal By law, Criminology or a related discipline is required.
- Post secondary certification or diploma in animal care from a recognized institution is required or an approved equivalent mix of education and work background.
- Work background working directly with animals is required.
- Work history in law enforcement, preparing investigation reports and applying municipal by-laws and legislation is required.
- Skilled in using computerized records management systems such as Chameleon and standard PC applications including Word, Excel and email.
- Must have a Ontario Class G driver’s license
Can obtain City permits for assigned vehicles and equipment. - Must receive rabies immunization and complete titre testing every two years with booster vaccinations if required.
- Good physical condition and strength are required for lifting animals and equipment weighing up to 25 kilograms.
- Strong knowledge of domestic and wildlife animal behaviour is required.
- Excellent interaction skills and conflict management skills are required when dealing with staff, the public and outside contacts.
- Strong verbal and written interaction skills with tactful and patient public service approaches are required.
- Strong knowledge of animal service by laws and legislative requirements is required.
Can work independently and within a team setting. - Strong knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements is required.
- Successful candidates must provide a current Criminal Police Reference Check.
