Job Description

  • The candidate must evaluate traffic collision data, traffic volumes, site conditions and constraints, and other relevant factors, and recommend corrective actions to improve traffic operations, including signal timing and coordination, as well as transportation network safety.
  • The candidate must coordinate installation activities and ensure that roundabouts, traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and all traffic control devices are consistently and correctly applied, and prepare traffic orders for the installation of regulatory traffic control devices.
  • The candidate must coordinate the implementation of roadway geometry changes, traffic calming measures, traffic re-routing, and road, lane, or sidewalk closures.
  • The candidate must respond to inquiries from the public, other City departments, consultants, and external organizations regarding traffic operations, safety, and transportation issues, including road improvements, parking, traffic control devices, and bylaws.
  • The candidate must respond to unsafe traffic issues, potential hazards, and neighbourhood traffic complaints, ensuring timely and effective communication with the public and affected agencies, including ICBC, MoTI, SD23, and RCMP.
  • The candidate must review development applications and provide solutions for various mobility and transportation-related deficiencies.
  • The candidate must review transportation assessments and update traffic volume maps using new data.
  • The candidate must review real estate purchases and disposals to ensure there are no conflicts with transportation department plans.
  • The candidate must prepare a variety of technical drawings, concept plans, and reports including road right-of-way, road alignment, and land acquisition plans, and apply in-depth knowledge of traffic engineering and roadway design best practices using AutoCAD, Synchro, HCM2000, and other design and modeling software.
  • The candidate must review and coordinate traffic signal infrastructure and budget estimates for upgrades with the traffic signal electrical group.
  • The candidate must support day-to-day operations of the traffic signal system and ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) components.
  • The candidate must coordinate activities of external agencies, including MoTI and BC Transit, that interface with this system.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must possess a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or a Transportation Engineering Diploma.
  • The candidate must hold a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • The candidate must demonstrate communication excellence in both verbal and written interactions.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong project management skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to service excellence in all duties and interactions.

  • The candidate will be required to perform field work, including the handling and operation of traffic count equipment.
