Job Description

  • The candidate will collaborate with Transmission Planning teams to identify, evaluate, and assess transmission resource options that support long-term system planning objectives.
  • The candidate will collaborate with external researchers and consultants to develop techno-economic assessments of various demand-side and supply-side resource options.
  • The candidate will provide technical expertise on integrating renewable energy resources, including wind, solar, and hydro, into the power system.
  • The candidate will conduct power system studies and modeling activities to support informed transmission and resource planning decisions.
  • The candidate will participate in cross-functional teams and working groups to coordinate planning activities across departments.
  • The candidate will prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate planning analysis and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • The candidate will support regulatory filings and stakeholder engagement activities related to transmission and resource planning initiatives.
  • The candidate will monitor emerging technologies and industry trends to identify opportunities for improving transmission and energy system planning.
  • The candidate will ensure planning activities align with BC Hydro’s safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement principles.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a recognized educational institution.
  • The candidate must hold a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in British Columbia or qualify for immediate registration.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of eight years of progressive engineering experience in transmission planning, energy systems analysis, or related areas.
  • Candidates who do not fully meet the qualifications or have less experience may be considered for a lower-level position.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong knowledge of energy system planning principles, including load flow, stability, and contingency analysis.
  • The candidate must have experience conducting basic economic assessments of energy supply options.
  • The candidate must understand non-wires alternatives and their application within utility planning processes.
  • The candidate must understand renewable energy integration and its impact on transmission system planning and operations.
  • The candidate must demonstrate proficiency with power system modeling tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or equivalent software.
  • The candidate must have experience working with cross-functional teams and managing multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and effectively explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • The candidate must understand BC Hydro’s infrastructure and planning processes or similar utility systems.
  • The candidate must understand regulatory and policy frameworks related to transmission and energy planning in British Columbia.
  • The candidate must identify and evaluate emerging technologies that support grid modernization initiatives.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex engineering challenges.
  • The candidate must demonstrate commitment to safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement principles.
