Job Description

  • The candidate will assess and analyze project-related data and methodologies and prepare reports and supporting materials for agency review, including impact assessments and mitigation or compensation measures associated with existing, planned, or future BC Hydro operations, maintenance activities, and projects.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing detailed terms of reference, budget estimates, analytical reports, and other research reports for a full range of complex fish and wildlife related research and program projects.
  • The candidate will be responsible for determining project approaches, objectives, parameters, costs, staff requirements, and priorities.
  • The candidate will review, evaluate, and recommend the selection of consultants and assess their reports to determine technical acceptability.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing and implementing work plans and schedules to mitigate and/or compensate for the effects of new and existing BC Hydro facilities, waste management and pollution prevention systems, operations, and construction projects on fish, aquatic, wildlife, and natural ecosystems.
  • The candidate will be responsible for inspecting, monitoring, and administering projects, including all contract administration activities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on technical studies and field programs related to construction, operations, and maintenance activities involving wildlife, fish, aquatic, and natural ecosystems.
  • The candidate will be responsible for conducting research, special programs, and technical studies and assessing the implications of various environmental control technologies used in existing and proposed BC Hydro facilities.
  • The candidate will be responsible for determining and recommending project or study approaches, investigation parameters, costs, staffing requirements, and priorities while providing advice to others.
  • The candidate will prepare impact, assessment, planning, project, and other related reports.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing and reviewing facilities maintenance programs, operations, ongoing projects, and plans to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, policies, and standards and to ensure required programs are implemented effectively and efficiently.
  • The candidate will initiate and assist with the development of waste management policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coordinating with First Nations, internal and external groups, and government agencies regarding environmental management work.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing technical advice and guidance to support the inclusion of environmental issues, objectives, and strategies in the business planning process.
  • The candidate will be responsible for serving as a biological and/or scientific specialist at public meetings, license hearings, program groups, and environmental groups.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing technical advice and instructions to field personnel during emergency environmental problems.
  • The candidate may be required to deploy to the field to respond to unforeseen environmental concerns and coordinate mitigation responses and related internal and external communication and reporting.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in investigations as required.
  • The candidate will provide technical direction and expert advice to area, program, and cross-discipline staff at the steering committee level and contractors involved in assigned projects.
  • The candidate will be responsible for carrying out some or all duties associated with lower-level Natural Resource Specialist jobs.
  • The candidate will perform minor duties related to the above responsibilities that do not affect the rating of the job.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science degree, such as Biology, Geoscience, or a related field, along with five (5) years of relevant work experience, or a Technologist Diploma in Science combined with six (6) years of relevant work experience.
  • The candidate must be registered as a professional with a regulatory body governed by the BC Professional Governance Act or be eligible for registration and obtain registration within two (2) months of hire.
  • The candidate must hold a valid Class 5 driverโ€™s licence.

  • The candidate will be required to successfully complete pre-employment alcohol and drug testing as a condition of employment for this safety-sensitive position.

Work Conditions

  • The candidate will be required to travel frequently along the NCTL.
  • The candidate may be required to perform camp work from time to time.
  • The candidate must be able to work set shift schedules, which will be discussed during the interview process.
  • The candidate will be required to undertake frequent field trips to remote areas and operate boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, and 4X4 trucks on rough access roads to conduct field work.
  • The candidate may be required to participate in helicopter-based surveys.
  • The candidate will be required to work in all weather conditions without shelter while performing field work and working at construction and operational sites.
  • The candidate will be regularly exposed to work around water, including rivers and reservoirs, while performing field work.
  • The candidate will be required to hike and climb over rough terrain on a regular basis while carrying field equipment of moderate weight.
