Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for performing redaction services on sensitive files in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • The candidate will be required to exercise independent judgment on a variety of legal matters to achieve applicable goals and desired outcomes.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining knowledge of Acts, Rules and Regulations, and other legal rules and procedures within the area of practice while keeping current on changes to modify internal precedents and procedures.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coordinating meetings and appointments and arranging logistics, including booking meeting rooms, travel, and accommodation.
  • The candidate will analyze the elements of complex legal matters required to bring each matter to a conclusion.
  • The candidate will maintain a records management system, including the disposal, archiving, retrieval, and security of electronic and hardcopy files.
  • The candidate will provide legal assistance and support by drafting and typing legal documents, including Bills of Cost, Summons, Trial Briefs, Chambers Records, Factums, and Affidavits, while ensuring legal documentation complies with statutory and judicial legal standards and the Rules of Court.
  • The candidate will be responsible for notifying civilian and police witnesses by subpoena, explaining their legal rights and responsibilities, arranging interviews, coordinating witness travel and attendance in Court, and calculating fees and expenses.
  • The candidate will schedule case management conferences, hearings, trials, pre-trials, examinations for discovery, examinations in aid of execution, mediations, and arbitrations in consultation with opposing counsel, trial coordinator offices, clients, and lay litigants.
  • The candidate will maintain a diary system for assigned legal counsel to ensure timely responses to correspondence, compliance with limitation periods, and attendance at appointments.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting with and liaising on behalf of legal counsel in relation to IT issues.
  • The candidate will conduct online searches using various registries and legal databases, including Land Titles Registry, Personal Property Registry, QP LegalEze, and QuickLaw, and prepare reports on the findings.
  • The candidate will be responsible for proofreading, editing, and preparing a variety of legal documents.
  • The candidate will be responsible for analyzing current work processes and recommending solutions to improve efficiencies.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in and coordinating special projects and initiatives.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting with formal and informal training for other legal assistants regarding Branch and government policies and procedures required to meet operational needs.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have completed secondary school or possess an equivalent qualification.
  • The candidate must have completed a Legal Administrative Assistant Program from a recognized institution or possess equivalent experience gained through an administrative support role in a legal office environment.
  • The candidate must have at least one full year of experience within the past three years providing legal assistant support to lawyers in a Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who hold a Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate or Diploma.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with more than one full year of continuous experience within the past three years providing legal assistant support to lawyers in a Canadian jurisdiction.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
