Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for conducting prosecutions of offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes from inception to conclusion, as assigned.
  • The candidate will be responsible for reviewing material prepared by enforcement and investigative agencies to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support charges being laid, which charges should be laid, and whether to proceed by indictment or summary process, pursuant to BCPS policy.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing witnesses for court and dealing with witnesses, victims, and their families in a considerate and courteous manner.
  • The candidate will be responsible for applying to the court, where appropriate, for the protection and support of victims and witnesses, seeking non-contact terms in bail and probation orders, and making applications for restitution.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies in relation to the prosecution of offences and, where appropriate, the conduct of investigations.
  • The candidate will be responsible for answering general inquiries from the public relating to criminal law or the prosecution of offences.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in committees that endeavour to make the administration of justice more efficient or effective, as directed or assigned.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with other members of the Bar, court staff, enforcement agencies, and other participants in the justice system.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining current knowledge and understanding of law and procedures and attending appropriate continuing education programs.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar.
  • The candidate must be Crown Counsel Level 2 in their 6th to 11th year of call, with a minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including in the area of criminal law.
  • The candidate must be Crown Counsel Level 3 with 12 or more years of call and have a minimum of 2 years of recent experience  as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including in the area of criminal law.
  • The candidate must have significant trial experience.
  • The candidate must have experience prosecuting offences under the Criminal Code of Canada or federal statutes prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more years of experience employed as Crown Counsel with the BC Prosecution Service, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, or another provincial prosecution service.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
