Job Description

  • The Cook position supports food preparation and kitchen operations within Toronto Shelter and Support Services.
  • This is a part time indefinite role with shifts assigned on an as needed basis across multiple Toronto sites.
  • Staff work day, afternoon and evening shifts between 5:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. including weekends and holidays.
  • The role takes place in large scale kitchen settings supporting shelter and housing service programs.
  • Employees work with food service teams, supervisors and kitchen staff in fast paced environments.
  • The position includes hands-on meal preparation, food safety work and kitchen support duties across different shelter portfolios.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook meals using large scale kitchen equipment.
  • Review menus, food supplies and the prep needs daily.
  • Clean cut portion, and then mix ingredients for meals and desserts.
    Set up ovens, steamers and other cooking tools at the right settings.
  • Cook and bake dishes using standard recipes, plus any dietary requirements that apply.
  • Portion food into containers for service and for delivery, of course.
  • Keep an eye on food temperatures and write down the required details.
  • Make salads, sandwiches and cold food trays too, kind of routinely.
  • Label and store leftovers and the daily tasting samples.
  • Direct and support Food Services Workers during kitchen operations.
  • Retrieve and restock food supplies from storage areas.
  • Inform supervisors about shortages, stock levels and expiry dates.
  • Report equipment issues and health and safety concerns.
  • Clean work surfaces, knives and kitchen equipment.
  • Perform basic calculations and prepare food usage reports when required.
  • Deliver and replenish food items in service areas.
  • Oversee kitchen operations during supervisor absences.

Requirements

  • Must have completed the Food Handler or Safety Awareness Program from Toronto Public Health.
  • Must have graduated from a two year college cooking program, hold a Red Seal Certificate or have an equivalent mix of education and work history.
  • A Food Service Worker certificate from a registered college would be considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of kitchen equipment operation and maintenance is required.
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition, therapeutic diets and food preparation standards is required.
  • Strong knowledge of sanitation codes, hygiene and safe food handling methods is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations related to kitchen work is required.
  • Strong knowledge of WHMIS legislation and HACCP procedures is required.
  • Can work with directing and supporting kitchen staff effectively.
  • Must be comfortable preparing simple statistical reports and performing basic math calculations.
  • Can work with written and verbal instructions when it is required to prep notes or do a report.
  • Must be physically able to lift heavy cooking equipment, plus whatever supplies come with it.
  • Must be willing to offer respectful service that respects cultural and racial diversity among clients and staff.
  • Strong customer service and interaction skills are required.
  • Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check as a condition of employment.
