Job Description

  • The candidate will plan, organize, and perform maintenance and repairs on gasoline, diesel, and propane-fueled vehicles.
  • The candidate will perform preventative maintenance, including establishing schedules and completing required servicing.
  • The candidate will use online manuals and repair information to support maintenance activities.
  • The candidate will consult dealerships regarding warranty and repair information.
  • The candidate will perform CVIP inspections and verify reports online.
  • The candidate will safely operate and maintain shop tools and equipment, including tire machines, brake lathes, hoists, cranes, and hydraulic presses.
  • The candidate will perform MVA mechanical inspections on municipal units and as directed by Saanich Police.
  • The candidate will diagnose malfunctions, conduct tests, determine causes, and provide repair estimates.
  • The candidate will remove components and parts, disassemble units, inspect for wear and damage, repair or replace parts, service electrical, electronic, and conventional ignition systems, and make adjustments to ensure proper operation.
  • The candidate will obtain written operator reports and maintain vehicle servicing logs detailing maintenance and repairs in accordance with standard practices.
  • The candidate will perform auto body repairs, fabricate parts, and prepare metal surfaces for painting and finishing.
  • The candidate will weld, solder, paint, wire, build, repair, and maintain vehicles, parts, and equipment as required.
  • The candidate will repair hydraulic components and systems as required.
  • The candidate will perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks on equipment in the field.
  • The candidate will perform other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must have completed Grade 12 or an equivalent level of education.
  • The candidate must hold a Trades Qualification Certificate and Certificate of Apprenticeship in Commercial Transport, Automotive, or Heavy Duty Mechanics.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of four years of related experience, including apprenticeship training.
  • The candidate must possess a BC Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program Inspector’s Authorization Certificate.
  • The candidate is required to demonstrate knowledge in diagnosing equipment using computerized scan tools.
  • The candidate will be required to demonstrate strong knowledge of WCB regulations, WHMIS, and the Motor Vehicle Act.
  • The candidate must be willing to attend in-service training programs offered by Saanich or other authorized agencies.
  • The candidate must hold a Certificate of Attendance from a vocational or technical school for ARC and MIG welding or possess equivalent experience.
  • Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with an air brake endorsement.

  • The candidate must be able to work in all weather conditions and be available for shifts beyond the standard day shift.
