Job Description

  • The candidate will be responsible for conducting prosecutions of offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes from inception to conclusion, as assigned.
  • The candidate will be responsible for reviewing material prepared by enforcement and investigative agencies to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support charges being laid, which charges should be laid, and whether to proceed by indictment or summary process, pursuant to BCPS policy.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing witnesses for court and dealing with witnesses, victims, and their families in a considerate and courteous manner.
  • The candidate will be responsible for applying to the court, where appropriate, for the protection and support of victims and witnesses, seeking non-contact terms in bail and probation orders, and making applications for restitution.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies in relation to the prosecution of offences and, where appropriate, the conduct of investigations.
  • The candidate will be responsible for answering general inquiries from the public relating to criminal law or the prosecution of offences.
  • The candidate will be responsible for participating in committees that endeavour to make the administration of justice more efficient or effective, as directed or assigned.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with other members of the Bar, court staff, enforcement agencies, and other participants in the justice system.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining current knowledge and understanding of law and procedures and attending appropriate continuing education programs.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must hold membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or be immediately eligible for call to the British Columbia Bar.
  • The candidate must be in their 6th to 11th year of call and have a minimum of 3 years of recent criminal law (trial or appellate) experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada to qualify for the Crown Counsel Level 2 position.
  • The candidate must be in their 12th year of call or greater and have a minimum of 3 years of recent criminal law (trial or appellate) experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada to qualify for the Crown Counsel Level 3 position.
  • The candidate must have significant trial experience.
  • The candidate must be able to speak and write fluently in both French and English.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with 8 or more years of criminal law (trial or appellate) experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with criminal prosecution experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have conducted trials in French.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment as a requirement of the BC Public Service.

  • The candidate will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) and Enhanced Security Screening.

Work conditions and physical capabilities

  • The candidate will be required to travel regularly anywhere in the province. Travel is mandatory for this position and may be required several times per month for multiple days at a time, depending on operational requirements.
  • The candidate will be required to deal with disturbing cases, including images of child sexual assault and child sexual abuse.
  • The candidate will be required to deal with victims and witnesses who have been subjected to or witnessed traumatic events, including sexual abuse, catastrophic injuries, and death, or who have suffered other forms of extreme personal loss.
  • The candidate will be required to deal with traumatic violence or death scenes, including images of and evidence about deceased persons with catastrophic injuries.
  • The candidate will be required to manage sensitive, graphic, and highly confidential information.
  • The candidate will be required to be the object of negative public or media comment or criticism with limited ability to respond.
