Job Description
- An Agriculture Labourer assists with agricultural research field operations and general farm support tasks.
- The role supports field trials and agricultural projects at a research facility in Summerland, British Columbia.
- The team conducts their outdoor work to support the different activities of crop management and equipment handling and land preparation.
- The position contributes to maintaining fields, trees, roads, and research plots used for agricultural studies.
- Employees work as part of a team that supports scientific research and agricultural innovation.
- Positions available include one seasonal permanent role and one full time temporary role (12 months).
Responsibilities
- Prepare land according to requirements for agricultural research trials.
- Drive tractors and operate various agricultural machinery which includes mowers and seeders and chainsaws and sprayers.
- Assist with planting activities and irrigation work and spraying operations and harvesting tasks.
- Transport equipment between different work locations.
- Collect plant and soil samples for analysis.
- Maintain fields, roadways, grounds, and trees.
- Keep records related to field and research activities.
Requirements
- The job requires you to have security clearance at Reliability Status level.
- People need to show a valid Class 5 British Columbia driver’s license or its equivalent from other provinces and territories.
- The position requires employees to be available for unexpected overtime needs which may include weekend work.
- The person must lift things that weigh 25 kilograms while doing work that requires physical strength.
- The person needs to be able to work outside when facing various weather and environmental situations.
- The person can handle their allergies through protective gear and medication which they can use whenever necessary.
- The person needs to move across different types of land while handling commercial farming machines.
- The person needs to get and keep their Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.
- The person needs to finish their equipment training and keep it updated.
The requirement for this position includes either a secondary school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and training and work experience. - The person has experience using ground equipment which includes mowers and tractors and related machinery.
- The person has experience doing tasks that require physical work.
- The person has knowledge about agricultural crops and how to grow plants and all agricultural methods.
- The person understands how to safely use agricultural equipment and other mechanical systems for agricultural work.
- The person has strong teamwork skills and problem solving abilities and a dedication to maintaining safety standards.
- The person has the ability to execute instructions and procedures while following safety protocols.
- The person has the ability to document all work-related tasks through record keeping.
- The position requires English proficiency as a mandatory requirement.
- The Pesticide Applicator Certificate serves as an asset because it enhances qualifications.
- The candidate needs to have pest control experience and commercial agriculture or horticulture or tree fruit or vineyard production expertise.
- Can work with both piloting and servicing agricultural vehicles and industrial machinery.
