Job Description

  • The candidate must communicate and support the implementation of important changes through their work, collaboration with peers, and engagement with others across BC Hydro.
  • The candidate must focus on the continuous improvement of BC Hydro’s incident management system, including the investigation of serious incidents and assessment of findings to support development of meaningful corrective actions by management.
  • The candidate must lead safety and health investigations for serious incidents occurring at any location.
  • The candidate must coordinate the work of the investigation team, gather information through interviews, apply incident investigation analysis methodologies, consult subject matter experts as required, and prepare final investigation reports.
  • The candidate must act as a subject matter expert in the interpretation and application of safety incident management processes and investigation methodologies, engaging with all levels of the organization from field staff to executives and contractors, including presenting findings and analysis.
  • The candidate must review incident notifications for technical accuracy, conduct further research and investigation as necessary, and follow up with originators for data clarification, corrections, and compliance guidance.
  • The candidate must oversee and support the use of the incident management system, communicate roles and responsibilities related to incident management, and support the performance of incident investigations by others in the Safety group.
  • The candidate must provide guidance and quality assurance in the development of effective corrective action plans to address causes of safety incidents.
  • The candidate must audit the completion, implementation, and effectiveness of corrective actions arising from safety incidents.
  • The candidate must work with regulatory agencies (e.g., WorkSafeBC) to provide appropriate information required by regulators and support management in ongoing regulatory relationships.
  • The candidate must support planning and development of employee training and mentoring in safety incident management and investigation, and contribute to development of incident management standards and processes.
  • The candidate must perform duties of a minor nature related to the above responsibilities that do not affect the classification of the job.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must possess a university degree, diploma, or certificate in Safety Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • The candidate must possess a minimum of eight (8) years of experience, preferably including in-depth knowledge of utility, electrical, mechanical, construction, or civil trades.
  • The candidate must possess an understanding of complex technical matters required for incident investigations, preferably including experience leading incident investigations.
  • The candidate must possess knowledge of incident investigation analytical tools, risk analysis, management systems, auditing, and behavioural safety principles.
  • The candidate must possess knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations.
  • The candidate must possess well-developed analytical, research, and report preparation skills.
  • The candidate must possess strong relationship management skills and a proven ability to collaborate effectively with various levels of management and employees.
  • The candidate must possess well-developed oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Work Conditions

  • The candidate must maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence as a condition of employment.
  • The candidate will be required to travel to incident locations across the province using reliable transportation.
