Job Description
- The candidate will be required to lead or review the effectiveness and implementation of mitigation measures required by natural resource sector authorizations and regulations.
- The candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing laboratory and field studies to address fish species management questions and test new theories or approaches.
- The candidate will be responsible for leading, developing, and contributing to programs, projects, and initiatives focused on the management, protection, and recovery of fish species.
- The candidate will be responsible for developing and drafting science-based reports and standards and providing recommendations for management actions.
- The candidate will be responsible for providing science-based information and advice to Senior Biologists, section heads, ministry clients, First Nations, stakeholders, management, decision makers, and practitioners.
- The candidate will be responsible for documenting methodology, information sources, and content in accordance with applicable scientific standards for species assessments.
- The candidate will be responsible for developing methodologies and plans and implementing inventories and other biological sample or specimen collection activities.
- The candidate will be responsible for leading the development, preparation, and delivery of extension notes and other communication materials under the direction of the supervisor.
- The candidate will be responsible for contributing to projects addressing large-scale resource management issues and leading project planning sessions to determine scope, define deliverables, and pursue funding.
- The candidate will be required to review published and unpublished research data and use statistical techniques to analyse, quantify, and synthesize data.
- The candidate will be required to develop and promote working relationships and support negotiation of agreements with internal and external partners, stakeholders, First Nations, and government agencies to achieve program or project objectives.
- The candidate will be required to conduct environmental and biological assessments to determine whether legal objectives or regulatory requirements have been met, gather evidence, document findings, and provide assistance to compliance authorities.
- The candidate will be required to develop and administer contracts and assess and monitor performance.
- The candidate will be required to manage project budgets and expenditures.
- The candidate will be required to act as a delegated decision-maker in accordance with policy and legislation.
- The candidate will be required to act as a witness for cases that appear in court and administrative proceedings.
- The candidate will be responsible for writing scientific and technical papers for publication.
- The candidate will be responsible for contributing to organizational initiatives and coordinating business enterprise and tactical operational planning across ministry business lines.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
- The candidate must have a minimum of four years of related fisheries experience, or an acceptable combination of education and experience, including field-based biological sampling, analysis and reporting, and providing advice within a regulatory regime.
- The candidate must be registered, or eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in British Columbia with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) within six months of employment. Eligibility requires possession of a designation equivalent to the CAB’s RP Bio in another jurisdiction at the time of application and the ability to transfer that designation to British Columbia within six months of employment.
- The candidate must have a minimum of four years of related fisheries experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.
- The candidate must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s licence.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience in recreational fisheries, stock assessment, and fisheries management.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience assessing, analyzing, and recommending stocking prescriptions for stocked lakes.
- The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.

Work conditions
- The candidate must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
- The candidate must be able to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments, including travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, overnight or extended stays in camp conditions, and operation of a variety of equipment.
- The candidate must meet the safety standards of WorkSafeBC.
