Job Description

  • The candidate will provide direct clinical services, including intake, assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, and consultation and liaison with community agencies, schools, hospitals, and other ministry programs.
  • The candidate must administer and score mental health assessment tools appropriate to their profession.
  • The candidate will provide comprehensive assessments, develop treatment plans, and conduct individual, group, and family therapy.
  • The candidate will conduct age-appropriate mental status assessments, including suicide assessments, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
  • The candidate will maintain a basic knowledge of psycho-tropic medications prescribed by physicians and remain aware of their effects.
  • The candidate will create and maintain clinical, client, and administrative records using established electronic and physical file systems as required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining effective relationships with clients, families, physicians, schools, and hospitals to coordinate services, gather input, encourage cooperation, resolve conflicts, support positive outcomes, provide community consultation, and deliver educational services and training on emotional and behavioural disturbances.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining a respectful environment that promotes emotional, physical, and cultural safety for children, youth, and families.
  • The candidate will be responsible for building trauma-informed relationships with children, youth, families, caregivers, and colleagues while demonstrating compassion, respect, cultural agility, and developmental sensitivity.
  • The candidate will be responsible for assisting families and caregivers during crises, periods of intense emotional distress, and challenging situations that may involve diagnoses, child death, or prognosis.
  • The candidate will be responsible for integrating traditional worldviews and Indigenous approaches, where appropriate, and using best practices that align with each child or youth’s family, cultural, and community context.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting cultural connections for Indigenous children and youth by identifying and incorporating cultural needs into planning and review meetings.
  • The candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining respectful, collaborative relationships with community partners, professionals, traditional healers, Knowledge Keepers, and Elders.
  • The candidate will be responsible for coordinating planning and review meetings in partnership with multidisciplinary teams and supporting community and ministry initiatives, even when collaboration involves disagreement or conflict.
  • The candidate will support families in working collaboratively with Education, Health, and Community partners by attending meetings and assisting with family advocacy.
  • The candidate will support and assist families and caregivers in preparing and planning for a youth’s transition to adulthood and relevant adult services.
  • The candidate will perform other duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • The candidate must possess a Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Educational Counselling, Clinical Counselling, Clinical Psychology, or Child and Youth Care, or a comparable graduate degree at the Master’s level in a similar subject may be considered.
  • The candidate must confirm that if their degree was obtained outside of Canada, it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES).
  • The candidate will be required to have a minimum of 1 year full-time equivalent experience working with children and youth and their families, with responsibility for providing a wide range of community based mental health services.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with 2+ years of experience working with children and youth and their families, with responsibility for providing a wide range of community based mental health services.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who self-identify as having an Indigenous heritage (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience.
  • The candidate must possess and maintain a valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s license.
  • The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.

Work conditions

  • The candidate must be available to work evening and weekend shifts when required.
  • The candidate must be willing to travel to remote locations when required.
  • The candidate may be required to work with families, children, and youth who are distressed and facing challenges, which may occasionally involve exposure to unpleasant situations or behaviour involving angry, abusive, or abused clients, as well as hazards associated with frequently working around parents and/or children in crisis who may display volatile behaviour.
