Planner Community Planning

City of Toronto has released a notification in which they’re inviting candidates for the post of Planner Community Planning. Candidates should recognize the responsibilities and obligations, and put forth their maximum effort. They will review development applications, including Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment applications. They will conduct planning studies on a range of planning issues, including the preparation of  terms of reference and study designs.

Job description

  • Candidates will develop recommendations and draft reports for Committees and Council.
  • They will prepare and present expert evidence and opinion before the Ontario Land Tribunal and/or the Toronto Local Appeal Body.
  • They will evaluate new planning initiatives.
  • They will identify, negotiate, and mediate conflicting positions with groups which have varied interests.

Job requirement

  • Candidates must possess considerable experience writing planning reports and correspondence to management, staff, elected officials, other agencies, and the public, for example staff reports and planning rationales.
  • They should gain experience participating in land use planning research projects and/or studies.  
  • They should have the eligibility for membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and/or Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).

Work setting

  • Candidates must have effective consulting, conflict resolution and negotiating skills when working with the community members, developers, consultants, other City Divisions, and public and private agencies.
  • They must have excellent research skills, critical judgement, and analytical thinking.
  • They must have strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and complete project assignments working both independently and as part of a team.
